Puno

Situated at 3,825m on the shore of Lake Titicaca, the city of Puno is located on an plateau extension of Collao, bordering Bolivia.

This city is the departure point for the majestic lake, and also for access to certain regions of Bolivia, such as the capital La Paz and small settlements situated on the Bolivian shores of the lake.

Situated at 3,800 metres of altitude, Lago Titicaca is 175km in length and 50km in width, making it the highest navigable lake in the world and the biggest above 2,000m. Its maximum depth reaches 280 metros and it is fed by more than 25 tributaries. Near Puno are the floating islands called Uros, constructed in their entirety of straw of 'totora', which grows at certain parts on the shore of the lake. On the layers of straw that forms these artificial islands, the inhabitants have built their houses. The people who live on these islands, and who are generally refered to as 'Aymara', live off fishing and textile production, which they occasionally sell in the markets of Puno.
